National Parents as Teachers Day: Teaching Love Through Planning

Today is National Parents as Teachers Day. This day recognizes something parents know well: children learn from us long before they ever walk into a classroom. They learn from what we say, what we do, how we show up, how we handle challenges, how we care for others, and how we plan for the future.

As parents, we teach our children countless lessons, often without even realizing it. We teach them responsibility, kindness, resilience, patience, generosity, and how to think ahead. Estate planning may not seem like an obvious parenting lesson, but in many ways, it is.

When parents plan ahead, they are showing their children that love includes preparation. They are making thoughtful choices about who could care for their children, who could make decisions if needed, and how their family would be supported if the unexpected happened.

For parents with minor children, estate planning can help address:

  • Guardianship wishes

  • Financial decision-making

  • Healthcare decision-making

  • Trusted adults who could step in if parents are unavailable

  • How assets should be managed for children

National Parents as Teachers Day is a good reminder that the lessons we pass down are not only spoken. They are also lived. Planning ahead is one way parents can teach love, responsibility, and care for the future.
